The Resident Book

Introduction

The UUDD of MFIC of Catalonia began in 1994, a formative assessment strategy complements existing summative assessment from the Ministry of Health with the aim of better defining elements that enter the learning of the resident. This project is being carried out with the cooperation, since 2001, of the Institute of Health Studies (IES).


The Resident Book is an instrument allowing to gather items that demonstrate the learning process and to stimulate learning based on self-reflection. It coherently integrates different existing elements: competence areas of the specialty program, the resident's book and activities in Catalonia that have being developed for years to measure the competence towards the learning goals outlined in the program.

 

 

What is The Resident Book?

The Resident Book is a compilation of information and documentation demonstrating that a learning process has been conducted and / or educational objectives have been achieved. The Resident Book is a tool for learning assessment. Its purpose is to guide the resident's training to improve professional competence. The Resident Book must be a reinforcement  in the resident’s role as the protagonist of their learning and reflection on the acquisition of various skills as a family physician.

 

 

What are the objectives of The Resident MFIC Book?

According to the "Book of Specialist Training":
 

  • Leading to the formation of a resident professional competence necessary for the proper performance of the specialty.
  • Strengthening experience "assessment for learning" (formative) throughout the training process.
  • Promoting the vision of the error and weaknesses as a starting point for planning improvements.
  • Stimulating reflection and self-evaluation as key elements for promoting change.
  • To initiate the resident self-directed learning based on self-reflection necessary for professional development throughout life.
  • Guiding the tutoring relationship to a relationship of mutual trust and respect in which the guardian accompanies facilitating and stimulating learning.
  • Promoting habits of planning the training approach based on specific learning objectives, related to the specific training needs of the resident.
  • The objectives must be measurable and assessable during the residency period.
  • Identifying, recognizing and enhancing the learning process, linked to their own practice, used by a resident as the main source of opportunities to consolidate skills.
  • Stimulating creativity and resident tutors in solving learning problems, promoting the use of educational resources more tailored to the needs and characteristics of the resident and the environment.

 

How should a Resident's Book of the MFIC of Catalonia be?

For a portfolio is a useful tool must meet certain characteristics:
 

  • Clear instructions. The Resident Book doesn't have to be exhaustive. The material should be well organized for the purpose of the Resident Book, easy to find, attractive and adapted to the characteristics of a resident of MFIC.
  • The evidence says that improving the planning and monitoring of education, when combined with self-assessment and external assessment. The mentor should assist in this self-assessment and make this assessment. That is why tutoring is also included in the Portfolio tutor – resident interviews.

 

 

What is The Resident Book in Catalonia?

It consists of three parts, the first two from the Book of Specialist Training.

 

  • Timeline of the training period divided into 4 years of training is sub-divided into different sections to classify the most relevant activities from the educational point of view.
    Throughout the training, the resident physician performs many educational activities generated by the learning process as rotations and their reports, the sessions for different services, education and training, attendance at meetings, tasks, etc.
  • All these activities are part of their portfolio.
  • Competences guide for those residents who want to complete a self-assessment on each of the elements that make up the program according to the different powers beyond the operating indicators prioritized in tasks.
  • Tasks as tools that allow an assessment of the progress of the resident's competence, self-assessment by operational indicators of the areas studied and self-reflection.
